Let's talk built-in grills and islands. Built-ins and islands give you a bona fide outdoor kitchen environment and they're cheaper than building an addition onto your home!
Built-in natural gas or propane grills can be as simple as a grill in a brick surround or as elaborate as a custom crafted island with storage areas, ample counter and prep space, utility drawers, doors, a refrigerator and even a sink! An island will become the focal point of your yard and can transform an ordinary barbecue into an event!
Custom create your own island with a brick, stucco or rock base that will complement your home's exterior and give your island a unique appearance. What else can you customize? How about countertops? Would you like granite or tile? What color do you prefer? Choose a grill -- with or without a rotisserie? Natural gas or propane? Include a storage cabinet with one or two drawers or a shelf or two! A utility drawer is an option. You'll need a place to put your barbecue tools, towels and salt and pepper shakers.
If you choose to go with a built-in or customize your own island, there are a significant amount of accessories you may want to consider.
Access doors conceal your natural gas hookup or grill covers and makes access easy. Storage drawers can store barbecue tools, condiments, towels, and silverware. Some models have drawers that slide out for easy access to pans or heavier items and can even store your propane tank.
Warming drawers are designed to keep finished foods warm. Some models boast temperatures over 230°F and even have moist and crisp settings to adapt to any meal. Breads, rolls and tortillas stay warm and ribs or steak can be kept piping hot while preparing the rest of the meal. Warming drawers can keep almost every type of food warm for hours. Tip -- Consider a unit with steam pans and steam racks for added versatility.
For the serious entertainer, you can add a refrigerator (some models come with a wine rack and two temperature zones), beer taps and ice makers. A bar caddy/beverage center is the perfect companion as it chills beverages, stores juices or wines and can accommodate preparation materials. And -- don't forget the kitchen sink -- away from the kitchen, of course! You won't want to run back and forth to the kitchen since you have everything else you'll need right at your fingertips in the great outdoors! Add a couple of bar stools and an umbrella or canopy and you can go from the heat of the day barbecue to an intimate evening outdoor dinner.
